Soweto Soccer Initiative

The Hamba Bamba Funda Soccer Initiative is a spin off project that aims to support various teams in Soweto, with donations of football paraphernalia.
It was started in 2019 when a delegation from an amazing company in Germany called DIE GEWÄSSER-EXPERTEN! brought new soccer balls to South Africa.
Ingo Nienhaus, who heads the initiative has been collecting complete kits from German clubs ever since with the view of returning to South Africa and distributing it to underprivileged sides.
Göppinger Sportverein 1895 e.V. from near Stuttgart and SSV Homburg-Nümbrecht from near Cologne have so far donated cleats, jerseys, camisole, pants, gauntlets, shin guards, goalkeeper gloves, balls and much more...enough to probably kit out 4 complete teams up to now.

With the intervention of the pandemic, Ingo’s intention to return has been somewhat delayed but now with the travel restrictions that were imposed lifted he returned to South Africa in early November 2021.

Two events were earmarked where various teams from the Soweto area will be playing in tournaments and can be presented with the donations.

The first was hosted by the Steve Sekano Foundation in Dobsonville on the 13th of November 2021. Moroka Swallows legend Steve Sekano formed his NPO 5 years ago with the aim of uplifting the local community through football & netball, with his personal connections in sport.

Freedom Charter Football Club was founded in 2016 by Elias Mokhabi and Sithembiso Yingwane and offers around 80 children the opportunity to use their football talent as a way of keeping them on a straight and narrow path, away from drugs, gangs and therefore out of trouble with the law. They held an event on the 27th of November 2021 in Kliptown, where Ingo presented to them.
